Three people were killed and 11 others injured in a train crash in Croatia on Friday evening. A passenger train collided with a stationary freight train near the city of Novska, about 90 kilometers from the capital Zagreb, and derailed.
The accident happened around 9:30 p.m. The passenger train was on its way from Vinkovci to Novska when it collided with the stationary freight train about ten minutes from its destination. The freight train, which came from the Serbian border town of Šid, may have been stopped due to a technical defect.
The investigators suspect that the driver of the passenger train would have driven over the stop signal. It is not yet clear what speed the train was traveling at at the time of the collision. According to the media, a maximum speed of 120 kilometers per hour is allowed on this part of the route.
Iranian family among the injured
The three fatalities are Croats, their identities confirmed by authorities on Saturday, according to which two railway workers, the train driver (52) and the conductor (60), as well as a 17-year-old passenger from Novska were killed. According to the police, eight foreigners, including a child, were among the injured. The media reported that they should be Iranian citizens. Whether they traveled on the passenger or freight train has yet to be determined. A family of five from Iran is reportedly being treated at the hospital in Nova Gradiška. None of the 11 injured people who were taken to nearby hospitals are in a life-threatening condition. According to the media, it is the second worst train accident since Croatia’s independence.
