The mayor, appointed by Russia after the occupation of the southern Ukrainian city of Enerhodar, was apparently seriously injured in an explosion outside his home. He has confirmation that pro-Russian mayor “Andrei Shevchik and his bodyguards were injured in the explosion,” Dmytro Orlov, the elected mayor of Ukraine’s Enerhodar, told Telegram on Sunday.
Russian news agency Ria Novosti, citing an emergency services source, reported that Shevchik was in intensive care. Security circles say the explosion was caused by an “improvised explosive device,” the news agency said. Since there were no other injuries, a targeted attack on the pro-Russian local chief is assumed.
Enerhodar is located near Zaporizhzhya and is the site of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. At the end of February, Russian troops took control there. Across the Dnieper River and tens of kilometers to the north, Zaporizhzhya is still under Ukrainian control.
