Stopped at the border – refugees wanted to cycle from Tyrol to Berlin

Date:

At the border with Tyrol, Bavarian police arrested two men on Wednesday who wanted to cycle from Innsbruck to Berlin. It concerns two refugees from Morocco who wanted to stay with family or acquaintances in the German capital.

The men were spotted during a check on a cycle path near Mittenwald, shortly after the border with Tyrol. They could not identify themselves, the Federal Police Inspectorate of Rosenheim reported in a broadcast on Thursday. The 30-year-old and the 21-year-old said they boarded a train in Italy with their bikes to Austria.

They left the train in Innsbruck to continue their journey to Germany by bicycle. The purpose of the tour was Berlin, because friends or relatives lived there and wanted to stay with them. According to the online map service, it would have taken the men on bicycles about seven days to complete the approximately 700 kilometer long route. An adventurous itinerary, despite the stormy and wet weather forecast.

Rejected by Germany
But nothing came of it: the men were sent back and handed over to the Austrian police, and were also reported for attempting to enter the country illegally. According to initial findings, the two have already been registered in Italy. However, they no longer wanted to stay there due to a lack of earning opportunities. They had no interest in protection or asylum in Germany.
