Ten-year-old Michael Putz from Steyr received the “ORF Peace Light” at Vienna Airport. Due to the crisis situation, the boy did not travel to the Holy Land this year to light the candle in the grotto of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem.
The Peace Light is “this year more than ever a strong sign of the desire for peace that gives so many people hope and confidence,” emphasized Klaus Obereder, country director of ORF. State Governor Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP) was pleased that “we have managed to bring about the light of peace under difficult circumstances.” Its message is “more relevant than ever and a task for all of us to work and stand up for it day in and day out,” he said.
‘Know the light of peace from an early age’
After the ignition in Bethlehem, due to the limited air traffic to Tel Aviv, he was first taken to Amman and from there on a scheduled flight to Austria, where Michael Putz picked him up.
The student was selected as a Peace Light Child because of his commitment to the Boy Scouts, the Young Fire Brigade and the altar boys. “I have known the peace light from a young age, because it is part of our home at Christmas.”
