Austrian wins Spanish mega lottery

Date:

Good luck at Christmas: A 65-year-old Lower Austrian from the St. Pölten-Land district won the Spanish mega-lottery “El Gordo” two days before Christmas Eve. He bet on ticket number 58303 on the online portal “Lottoland”, which ultimately earned him no less than 250,000 euros. A nice pre-Christmas gift!

“We congratulate this year’s big winner ‘El Gordo’ and all other winners. “We are extremely happy to be part of this happy moment and are very proud to be an integral part of this global tradition,” said Laura Pearson, Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Lottoland, in a statement.

There was 2.6 billion euros in the pot!
With a total winning of no less than 2.6 billion euros, the largest lottery in the world kept people all over the world in suspense. No wonder the odds of winning were higher than many other lotteries. There were 100,000 five-digit ticket numbers, each existing 185 times. Every ticket with the drawn ticket number has won. The main prize, called “El Gordo” (“the fat one”), amounted to four million euros for a whole ticket. The odds of winning the top prize were 1:100,000.

At Madrid’s venerable Teatro Real opera house, students from the San Ildefonso boarding school announced the results, singing as they had for generations. The ceremony lasted several hours because many smaller prizes were also drawn.

Founded in Cádiz in 1812, the lottery is considered the oldest in the world and, due to the total amount played, also the largest. However, the individual winnings are not as high as some other lotteries, but there are many winners.

In Spain, the Christmas lottery was once again a big spectacle: some bought their tickets in July, but most stood in front of the more than 10,000 points of sale in recent days and gossiped with neighbors or even strangers. They all had hopes of one day winning the big prize.
