Toolbox blown up with uncle’s firecracker: two boys injured

Date:

Two boys aged ten and eleven blew up a toolbox in the garden of a family home in Voitsberg in western Styria on Tuesday. They used a firecracker given to them by their uncle. The children were hit by plastic fragments and investigations are now underway to find the eleven-year-old’s parents and uncle.

The ten-year-old went to visit the eleven-year-old on Tuesday. The two were playing in the garden when they came up with the idea to blow up the box. The parents were in the home and, according to police, knew that their son had received fireworks from his uncle – as they had often done in the past.

The fragments of the exploded toolbox hit the children in the body and face. The parents alerted the rescue team and the Red Cross took the boys to the Graz State Hospital for pediatric surgery. It turned out that the injuries were only minor.

Uncle not very insightful
The 44-year-old uncle, who has a fireworks permit, is now being investigated for negligent bodily harm, but also against the parents.

The 44-year-old, who is also accused of violating the Pyrotechnics Act, was not very insightful during his interrogation, according to the police. It is not yet entirely clear which fireworks it was and where it came from. This probably involved pyrotechnics without labeling or indication within the meaning of the Pyrotechnics Act.
