Al-Shifa Hospital – WHO calls for rapid evacuation from “death zone”

Date:

The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for the complete evacuation of the largest clinic in the Gaza Strip after visiting Al-Shifa Hospital. Experts from the organization spoke after a visit of a ‘death zone’.

The situation in the hospital was ‘desperate’, said a statement about the expert visit. There are currently 291 patients and 25 medical staff in the hospital. The WHO wants to organize several operations in the coming days to quickly evacuate patients to the Nasser Hospital and the European Hospital in the Gaza Strip, even though they are already overcrowded.

WHO chief: “Ceasefire. NOW.”
“The current situation is unbearable and unjustifiable,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on X (formerly Twitter) – demanding: “Ceasefire. NOW.” In the hospital there is no water, no electricity, no food and hardly any medical needs.

Mass grave at the entrance of the hospital
The team of experts found a mass grave at the entrance to the hospital and was told that more than 80 people were buried there, the WHO wrote in its statement. There were traces of shots and gunfire. The corridors and grounds of the hospital are full of (medical) waste, which increases the risk of infection. The hospital no longer functions as a medical facility.

According to the WHO, most patients still in hospital suffer from complicated fractures, burns, serious infections or serious spinal injuries and are unable to move without medical attention.

The Israeli military has been searching the site of the Al-Shifa clinic for days in search of the Hamas operations center, which it suspects is located beneath the sprawling complex.
