Due to the changes to the selection process introduced in 2022 and the associated relaxation of the admission criteria, the recruitment of new police officers has increased significantly. Across Austria, 605 people started their training from the beginning of this year to September, compared to 278 police officers in 2022. This represents an increase of 117 percent.
The increase was also significant in Vienna: in September 2022, 865 men and women applied for the September and December admission dates, while this year there were 1,261 people – an increase of around 45 percent.
The recordings have doubled
But it is not only the number of registrations that has increased sharply compared to the previous year. The figures also show that the number of admissions has doubled between 2022 and 2023. In September 2022, 62 police students started their training, and a year later, 126 police officers started their training in Vienna.
According to Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner (ÖVP), the measures taken in recent months have had an effect. He emphasized: “This is a good day for safety in this city and shows that the police profession is becoming increasingly attractive.”
Another 700 police officers will start their training in December 2023.
