Including lull in fighting – Hamas announces details of hostage deal

Date:

Islamist Hamas has revealed details of a possible hostage deal with Israel. The deal provides for the release of 50 hostages and a five-day cessation of fighting in the Gaza Strip, several media outlets reported, citing Hamas.

In return, Israel will release 300 female and minor Palestinian prisoners from prisons, according to Israeli news site Ynet and local media. Civilians held in the Gaza Strip will be gradually released. Ten people are scheduled per day. The same is planned for Palestinian prisoners. The Israeli side should release thirty every day.

Not the first agreement
In addition, the deal reportedly allows 300 trucks carrying food, medical supplies and fuel to enter the Gaza Strip. Hamas said it had agreed to the agreement. Right-wing extremist Israeli Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has sharply criticized the possible deal. He feared the state could make a “very, very big mistake.”

He recalled the so-called Shalit deal from 2011. At that time, more than a thousand Palestinian prisoners were released, including the head of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Yahya al-Sinwar. In return, a hostage, Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, was released. Ben-Gvir is not a member of the war cabinet, which has not yet commented on the agreement.

A Hamas political official previously said, among other things, that they had moved closer to an agreement on the release of hostages and a cessation of fighting (see video above). The pause in fighting is scheduled for five days. The Gulf state of Qatar was involved in the mediation.

Military: Jabalya completely surrounded
The Israeli army says it has completely surrounded the town of Jabalya in the northern Gaza Strip. Military forces also attacked three shafts where suspected terrorists were hiding. The military also found weapons in apartments and children’s rooms, the report said.

With its mission, the Israeli army aims to destroy the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas, whose fighters attacked Israel on October 7. The refugee district of the same name in the Gaza Strip is also located in the city of Jabalya. About 116,000 people live there on 1.4 square kilometers who have had to flee the wars with Israel since 1948.

The army said it killed about 50 terrorists in an attack in the city. Photo and video recordings showed huge craters and destroyed houses. According to Palestinian information, the victims included many civilians.
