Police in the Punjab province have already arrested several suspects, including a brother and uncle of the women. According to the information, the sisters, who live in Spain, were married to their cousins in their hometown of Gujrat, but wanted a divorce in order to marry the men of their choice. The family lured them to Pakistan and assured them they would divorce, but a brother and uncle had already hatched the murder plan, local police chief Atta-ur-Rehman said. The two women are said to have been murdered on May 20 and a report was filed on Sunday.
Thousands of women killed by relatives every year
According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, about 1,000 women and young girls are murdered by their relatives every year. From the point of view of the perpetrators, this is intended to protect the family honour. In 2018, an Italian woman of Pakistani descent died while visiting her hometown in Punjab. Investigations later revealed that she was murdered by her close relative, also on the grounds of alleged family honour.
