The Eugendorf fire brigade was called in for a vehicle fire. The fire service found a charred body in the burned-out car.
The burning car was parked on Sunday in an unpaved parking lot at the fire brigade found it.
During the extinguishing work, however, the firefighters saw an even more horrifying picture: a charred corpse was found in the van.
Burning cigarette as a cause
The National Criminal Investigation Department took over the investigation. An autopsy, however, revealed no evidence of third-party negligence. Fire investigators and fire experts found that a lit cigarette was the most likely cause of the fire.
It is not yet clear who the body is. Attempts at identification have so far been unsuccessful. According to police information, the man is between 170 and 180 cm tall.
