The Jordanian army has increased its presence along the border with Israel. The latest troop deployment is part of measures to protect the country’s security, Prime Minister Damit Khasawneh said.
Moreover, the country will use “all the means at its disposal” to prevent Israel from expelling Palestinians en masse from the West Bank. Any Israeli attempt to force the Palestinian population across the Jordan is a violation of the peace agreement with the neighboring country.
A conflict between Israel and Gaza has long stoked fear in Jordan. The country is home to many Palestinian refugees and their descendants. In the current war in the Middle East, the country has stopped medical aid over the Gaza Strip. However, no more refugees should be admitted, partly due to historical concerns (see video above).
Criticism of Israel’s actions
Jordanian Prime Minister Weiter Khasawneh said about two weeks ago that the “brazen attacks on ambulances and humanitarian workers” contradicted Israel’s “principle of self-defense.” Any threat to Jordan’s national security would “put all options on the table.”
According to a report by the Palestinian news agency WAFA, five people were recently killed in a drone strike in Tulkarm in the West Bank. Others were injured. The Israeli army also raided Thabet Thabet Hospital.
In total, more than 1,400 people are said to have died in the Gaza Strip since the start of the war. The terrorist organization Hamas killed about 1,200 people in Israel on October 7 and kidnapped another 240 people to the Gaza Strip.
