More than eight months after the dismantling of a suspected Russian spy network, sixteen foreign citizens have been charged in Poland for alleged secret service activities for Russia. The defendants have apparently confessed and the list of accusations is long.
They are accused of carrying out “espionage activities on Polish territory” on behalf of Russian secret services and being part of a “criminal organization,” the Coordination Office for Secret Services in Warsaw said on Wednesday.
There is a risk of a long prison sentence
In March, Poland’s domestic secret service ABW reported that the suspected spy network had been dismantled. The members are said to be planning, among other things, to attach GPS transmitters to Polish aid convoys for Ukraine. They are also accused of spreading anti-Ukrainian propaganda.
The Secret Service Office explained that the indictment against the sixteen suspects had been sent to the responsible court. All sixteen would have held out. Polish Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro said on the online service X (formerly Twitter) that each of them could face up to 10 years in prison.
Hope for Ukraine
Poland is one of neighboring Ukraine’s most important military allies in its defense against Russia’s war of aggression that began in February 2022. But there has also been unrest in Poland recently about new military aid to Ukraine. However, with Donald Tusk’s election victory, tensions are likely to ease again. Poland is also a hub for Western military aid to Kiev.
