He also recalls the warnings he gave to Spain about the situation of the General Council for the Judiciary and the mandate of the Attorney General.
The European Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reyndersassured this Wednesday that the European Commission will review the proposed amnesty law sent to it by the Spanish government in a “careful, independent and objective” manner and in constant contact with the Spanish authorities.
In the debate before the plenary session of the European Parliament on the proposal of Spanish amnesty lawReynders has said the Commission will “stay abreast of the matter” and monitor the development of the law, including to prepare its next report on the rule of law in the European Union, to be published in summer 2024 .
Reynders also discussed before the European Parliament the warnings that Brussels gave to Spain in July in its report on the rule of law, especially about the situation of the General Council for the Judiciary (CGPJ), which is “of great concern”, and the mandate of the state attorney general.
The European Commission received the proposal eight days ago, and it has already been two weeks since Reynders sent a letter to the government requesting more information about the scope of the rule. He therefore explains that he has not yet completed his analysis of the proposal.
The commissioner has indicated that the Minister of Justice Félix Bolaños In his response to Brussels, he expressed “his willingness for dialogue” and that he is willing to meet the Commission to provide further explanations about the draft law.
Bolaños even plans to go to Brussels next week to explain the amnesty law to the commissioners.
Reynders also explained that the Commission has received “complaints and letters from a large number of citizens and interested parties” over the past two weeks. In any case, he added, Brussels continues to insist that the Catalan crisis “is an internal Spanish matter that must be managed in accordance with the constitutional order.”
