Two wild cats fell into a camera trap in the Gailtal in Carinthia. As the Austrian Federal Forests (ÖBf) announced in a press release on Thursday, this species is considered extinct in Austria, but is regaining habitat in natural forests.
This is also the case in a federal forestry district in Hermagor, near Lake Presseger. The ÖBf has been committed to local wildlife through the ‘Wildcat Platform’ since 2009, the report said.
Federal forestry happy with return
“The photos are the best proof that natural and sustainable forest management and the promotion of biodiversity and the protection of species go hand in hand,” says Antje Güttler, ÖBf operations manager for Carinthia-Lungau, excited about the return of the wildcat .
The shy and solitary wildcat has high demands on its habitat and would find sufficient space in the structurally rich, extensive forests.
