Serious riots broke out on Thursday evening after a knife attack in the center of the Irish capital Dublin that left several people injured, including three children.
According to television channel RTÉ, right-wing hooligans set fire to two buses and a police car. A store was allegedly looted. The crowd’s anger was also directed at police officers, who were pelted with bottles. Xenophobic slogans were also said to have been shouted.
Police chief: “Crazy hooligan group”
The responsible police chief spoke of a “crazy hooligan group” that had revolted. Justice Minister Helen McEntee condemned the riots as the act of a gang who used the bloody acts as an opportunity to ’cause chaos’.
A five-year-old girl and a woman were seriously injured in the knife attack near a school in the afternoon. Two other children suffered minor injuries, RTÉ reported. A suspect between the ages of 40 and 50, who was arrested at the scene, was also said to have been seriously injured.
Injured woman wanted to protect children
The woman was injured while standing protectively in front of the children. Several passers-by managed to overpower the man and hold him until the police arrived, the Irish Times reports.
