While the German Bundeswehr increasingly bans meat from the menu, local soldiers and farmers can breathe a sigh of relief: Schmalhans is not the master chef here!
No more beef roulade and steak in the German barracks kitchens? The last word has not yet been spoken, but the Bundeswehr’s food supply agency is considering drastically changing the menus of the troops in the neighboring country. For example, instead of beef and lamb, more poultry and pork, as well as vegetarian and vegan meat substitutes, could end up on soldiers’ plates. It seems that the previous food was too expensive and not “sustainable” enough for climate protection reasons.
The army kitchen must offer something suitable for everyone
However, the domestic defenders of the homeland have been given every certainty when it comes to ‘goulash cannons’. “Schmalhans will certainly not be our chef. Of course, the food in our army kitchens remains varied and fresh – I find that particularly important, as well as the fact that the food is regional,” explains Minister responsible Klaudia Tanner during the local inspection of “Krone”. According to the department head, nutrition and health are central to her when it comes to the food supply of the soldiers.
In addition, Tanner started the ‘Climate Plate’ initiative together with the federal army. This range of dishes – consisting of regional vegetables, products from sustainable production – and according to the latest insights in nutritional science, emphasizes climate protection. The minister emphasizes: “I am happy that our kitchens offer something tasty for everyone.”
The German ‘meat order’ previously caused a lot of discussion in this country. The Lower Austrian Peasants’ Union also championed the red-white-red army tradition. Its director, Paul Nemecek, immediately sought peace negotiations with his predecessor. Now there is actually the ‘beef guarantee’. Both agree: “Valuables from our farmers remain part of our barracks food without any ifs and buts – roast beef and beef roulade or steak are still on the menu, next to vegetables and balanced mixed dishes.”
Kazerne as a partner for regional agriculture
Both already stood shoulder to shoulder when it came to community catering. You have campaigned for mandatory labeling of the origin of meat, milk and eggs in large canteens. For Nemecek, the army with its barracks and troops is a strong and important partner for agriculture. He is therefore even happier with the minister’s clear commitment to domestic production: “Minister Tanner knows the concerns and challenges of farmers and their contribution to security of supply in Austria.”
