Right-wing populist Geert Wilders has clearly won the House of Representatives elections in the Netherlands, but he still misses his partners. This problem is also known to other right-wing parties in Europe.
Wilders wants to govern after his surprisingly clear election victory, but the coalition partners are still missing. Wilders’ Freedom Party (PVV) won 37 of the 150 seats in parliament, doubling the result in 2021. For a majority he needs at least two parties, so far no one has offered to do so.
FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl could experience a similar situation after the next elections. All other parties represented in parliament rule out a government led by Chancellor Kickl. “The parallels are certainly there,” says political advisor Thomas Hofer in an interview with the “Krone”.
Right-wing parties are on the rise
Right-wing parties are on the rise across Europe. “And the protective wall of others against these movements is crumbling,” says Hofer. The rise of the right will become clear during the EU elections. “They realize a space is opening up for them and they come together.”
Wilders was applauded by right-wing populists in Europe. FPÖ European MP Harald Vilimsky, German AfD leader Alice Weidel, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and French right-wing nationalist Marine Le Pen offered their congratulations.
