Pungent odor – large-scale operation: chemicals leaked from the heating system

Date:

Spilled chemicals claimed the fire brigade in Klagenfurt on Thursday evening and sparked a large-scale operation.

As soon as they arrived, the dangerous goods warehouse at the Stadtwerke thermal power plant was heavily fogged up and there was a sharp odor in the air, emergency services described. “We immediately alerted the state chemist and the state air quality expert.” It was soon discovered that large quantities of hydrochloric acid and caustic soda were stored in the warehouse. However, no leak could be detected because all pumps were switched off when the work started.

150 liters leaked
Still, the fire brigade estimates that around 150 liters of chemicals have leaked. These were pumped into a neutralization tank and the room was thoroughly cleaned. The emergency services are very clear: “There was never any immediate danger to the residents.”
