The fact that a National Socialist is still the only honorary citizen in the city of Braunau is currently causing outrage not only among the Mauthausen Committee. The Hitler fan could finally be expelled from the street names next year, along with another historical anti-Semite.
The city of Braunau currently has only one honorary citizen: the composer Josef Reiter (1862 to 1939). He was arguably a staunch National Socialist. Reiter, among other things, openly expressed his wish to see a Jew dangling from every tree on the Ringstrasse in Vienna. He also had close ties with Adolf Hitler, was his guest at the Obersalzberg and dedicated a composition to the “Führer”.
So far socially acceptable
There is also a street named after Josef Reiter in Braunau. A new name was unanimously rejected by the city’s culture committee in 2012.
Due to strong criticism from the Mauthausen Committee and the Upper Austrian Network against right-wing extremism, city boss Hannes Waidbacher has now announced a review of honorary citizenship and a possible renaming of Reiterstrasse and Franz-Resl-Strasse. The second was also a fanatical anti-Semite and seditious National Socialist. The city of Linz therefore decided last year to rename a street named after the popular poet Franz Resl (1883 to 1954).
