A US military plane with eight people on board crashed into the sea in western Japan on Wednesday. According to the Japan Coast Guard, the accident occurred at 2:47 PM local time (6:47 AM CET) near Yakushima Island.
Eyewitnesses reported that the left engine of the V-22 Osprey plane appeared to be on fire, Japanese television channel MBC reported. A spokesman for US forces in the region said information about the incident was being gathered.
Several serious incidents
In August, an American Osprey plane crashed off the coast of northern Australia. Three Marines died at that time. Another such aircraft crashed off the southern Japanese island of Okinawa in December 2016, prompting the US military to impose a temporary ban on the aircraft type.
