90 days from the start of the invasion May 24, 2022

Date:

Today marks three months since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, which killed thousands of civilians and soldiers and displaced millions. Half the world’s safety and life may be in danger, but no power seems interested in ending the conflict.

Today, May 24, is fulfilled three months since the start of Russia’s “special military operation” over Ukraine. 90 days of invasion and war that killed thousands of civilians, left tens of thousands dead in the ranks of both sides, razed cities and towns to the ground, destroyed infrastructure and forced 14 million people to flee their homes, including 8 million have left the country.

However, after three months of fighting, attacks and counter-attacks, despite the energy risk facing Europe, the famine that threatens half the world and is on the brink of global war, no one seems to bet on peace

While calculate the great powers how far they can stretch the rope, punish, block and tighten the nuts, On the ground the barbarity continues The winner of the game is not yet in sight, but in this war, as in all wars, those who lose are always the same, the civilians.

The attacks have been concentrated in Donbas in recent days. Indeed, the UN has warned of “heavy” fighting in eastern Ukraine, in Lugansk, Donetsk and Kharkiv, where civilians are killed and injured, and houses damaged or destroyed, caught in the crossfire, residential buildings and civilian infrastructure.

The President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky, assured on Monday that Russian troops have committed “a massacre” in the east of the country, in the Donbas region, and warned that the coming weeks will be “difficult” under the Russian invasion of the country.

“The most difficult combat situation today is in Donbas. Bakhmut, Popasna, Severodonetsk. In this direction the occupiers have concentrated their greatest activity so far (…) They are trying to destroy everything that lives there. Literally. Nobody destroyed Donbas just now as much as the Russian army is doing now,” he said.

Local authorities in Donbas also denounced attacks by Ukrainian troops.

In addition to the lack of food and problems in the electricity supply, there is now the gas austerity in these regions. Since the Ukrainian energy company GTS has stopped supplying gas to the Donetsk and Lugansk regions due to the damage suffered by the bombing of the main gas pipeline supplying the area.

The operator explained that he has located the damaged section, although he regretted that the repair is “impossible due to active hostilities”. In addition, he emphasized that the area currently has no “alternatives in gas transport”.

Sentenced to life for the first Russian soldier

On the other hand, a Ukrainian court on Monday sentenced a Russian soldier charged with war crimes to life in prison for the murder of a civilian in the country’s first trial on these charges since the start of the war.

Ukrainian authorities have opened more than 9,000 war crimes trials since the start of the Russian invasion.

Russia, just as Ukraine did with its own soldiers, has asked the ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) to have access to its detainees.

Meanwhile, all Ukrainian prisoners who laid down their weapons in Azovstal remain in custody in the self-proclaimed Donetsk Republic, where they will be tried by an “international court”.

This was announced by Denis Pushilin, the leader of this self-declared pro-Russian republic, who has assured that “the statute of the court is currently being drafted,” according to what he told Interfax news agency.
