The fact that Elvis A. – a Slovenian living in Wels – became radicalized worried his own family. When the mechanic probably wanted to leave Wels for the Gaza Strip in November, his relatives raised the alarm. Now 37-year-old A. is awaiting extradition in Bulgaria.
It is not known exactly which developments worried Elvis A.’s family. Nevertheless, the relatives of the Slovenian, who has lived in Upper Austria for a long time and works there as a mechanic, may have noticed clear radicalization tendencies in the 37-year-old.
A. would have started the journey at the beginning of November; his desired destination was probably the Gaza Strip, where the radical Islamic Hamas is in charge. Apparently A. wanted to join the terrorist group in the fight against Israel. Meanwhile, his family alerted the police.
It ended at the Bulgarian border
The Upper Austrian’s journey came to an end on November 24. The suspected Hamas fan was arrested as he tried to leave Bulgaria after the Welsh public prosecutor’s office issued an international arrest warrant two days earlier. According to his own statements, A. was only on a “pilgrimage” to Turkey.
Extradition was requested
Since then, Elvis A. has been in custody in the Bulgarian capital Sofia. According to information from “Krone”, extradition to Austria has already been requested. However, according to the Public Prosecution Service, it cannot yet be said how long the extradition process will take.
Moreover, Elvis A. is accused of possible membership of a terrorist organization – the presumption of innocence applies. He is said to have already committed criminal offenses in Austria. No other people are being investigated.
