In view of the ongoing fuel shortage in Sri Lanka, the government has increased the price of petrol and diesel. At the same time, Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera on Tuesday encouraged people to work from home to minimize fuel needs.
The liter price for petrol has increased by 82 rupees (about 21 cents) to 420 rupees (about 1.09 euros), for diesel by 111 rupees (about 29 cents) to 400 rupees (about 1.04 euros). The price increases also caused higher ticket prices for public transport on Tuesday.
The island nation south of India is currently experiencing its worst economic crisis in decades. There is a shortage of fuel, gas and medicines. The government has asked India, China and Japan and international organizations for help. Protesters in front of the president’s office have been demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa for 45 days.
