Spanish king Felipe VI. And Queen Letizia will come to Austria surprisingly in May. They were invited by federal president Alexander van der Bellen. One of her way leads her to the international liberation celebration of the Mauthausen concentration camp in Upper Austria.
This is planned on 11 May. The Spaniards were one of the first larger prison group in Mauthausen. In the course of the German invasion of France, tens of thousands of Spanish civil war refugees were fascinated in French prisons. About 7,000 of them were transferred to the concentration camps of Mauthausen and Gusen, about two -thirds died in the murder machines. The nearly 22,000 Spaniards who had survived could leave Austria late after the liberation, because the Franco regime was still in power in their home country.
“Mauthausen-Babys” come to the celebration
On May 5, the liberation of the concentration camps of Mauthausen and Gusen is the 80th time by the US Army. Delegations from numerous countries, Austrian politicians and survivors of Holocaust are traditionally expected for the commemoration. The ranks of the latter are becoming increasingly scarce. Shaul Spielmann was expected on Sunday, which was freed from the Gunskirchen concentration camp from the Gunskirchen concentration camp in 1945. His parents were murdered in Birkenau. The 87-year-old continues to appear as a warning contemporary witness. Three ‘Mauthausen’ babies are also expected, which were born only a few days and weeks before the liberation.
Almost every second survival is not
A memorial train and lying wreaths are planned this Sunday. Between 1938 and 1945, nearly 200,000 people from more than 40 countries were held in the Mauthausen concentration camp, about 90,000 survived. The circumstances were particularly difficult in the Gusen Branch Camp. The prisoners had to build a tunnel system for the armored industry under the camouflage name “rock crystall”.
The celebrations of the commemoration and the liberation have been dedicated every year to a special subject since 206, this time the head is “Together for a never again”. This reputation is more active than ever before, the organizational team said. Peace is of course not.
