A violent explosion at a factory site about 70 kilometers northeast of Moscow has sparked speculation: observers suspect a drone attack behind it – the Russian state news agency TASS contradicted this account.
The incident happened in Sergiyev Posad town, which is also popular among tourists. About a dozen were injured, it was reported.
The affected factory produces optical equipment, reportedly also for military use. Photos and videos of a large column of smoke in the sky were published on social networks.
The governor of the Moscow region, Andrey Vorobyov, announced that he would go to the city of Sergiyev Posad to get an idea of the situation on the spot.
Drones in Moscow apparently stalled
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin previously reported that Moscow had become the target of an attempted drone strike. Two drones were shot down by anti-aircraft fire, Sobyanin said Wednesday morning in his blog on the Telegram news service. It was a “terrorist attempt” by the “Kiev regime” that was prevented. There were no injuries or damage, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. The ministry in Moscow blamed the “Kiev regime” for the attacks.
Facade of high-rise buildings in Moscow hit by drone attack
At the end of July/beginning of August, the Russian capital with the skyscraper district of Moskwa City was twice the target of a drone attack within three days. According to Russian information, several drones were shot down. But the facade of a glass tower was also hit.
The city of millions has been the target of drone strikes several times, which have nothing to do with Russia’s massive attacks in its devastating offensive war against Ukraine, which has now lasted for 17 months. Moscow repeatedly fired drones, missiles and cruise missiles at the capital Kyiv. There were deaths, injuries and enormous damage in Kiev.
Ukrainian naval drones threaten Russian ships
According to British assessments, Ukrainian naval drones remain a threat to Russia. The British Ministry of Defense looked at the attacks on the Russian tanker “Sig” and the landing ship “Olenegorski Gornjak” in its daily update on Wednesday. The British wrote on Twitter that an attack on Russian patrol boats, which probably accompanied the Russian merchant ship “Sparta IV”, had also apparently been thwarted in advance.
“The attacks demonstrate that UAV operations are fast becoming an important part of modern naval warfare and can be used against vulnerabilities in Russia’s seaborne supply routes,” the ministry wrote in London.
