After three years at the top, Vienna loses first place in the “Global Liveability Index” – of all things because of falling stability.
Vienna is no longer the most livable city in the world – at least when it comes to the renowned “Global Livability Index” by Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). For the first time in years, the Austrian capital was thrown through the throne – from Copenhagen. The Danish capital conquered the top position with highest figures in the field of stability, education and infrastructure. Vienna had to be satisfied with second place – at the same time with Zurich.
Perfect values for the Danes
In the current ranking, Copenhagen received the maximum assessment of 100 points in three central categories: stability, education and infrastructure. “Beautiful, beautiful Copenhagen” – as it is said in the International Media Echo – even left Vienna behind, who last led the list for three years in a row.
The stumbling block is called security
But why was Vienna completely slipped away? According to EIU, a “clear decline” was decisive for the stability value. The reason: a number of security-related incidents, especially a bomb threat for a Taylor Swift concert last summer, which led to the cancellation of the event. The thwarted attack on the Westbahnhof is also given as a reason.
The incident is symptomatic of general interpretation in the field of public safety, says the analysis. “The pressure on the stability levels has led Vienna to have lost the title after three years,” Barali Bhattacharya, deputy director of the EIU industry department, told CNN. The trend is comparable worldwide – the stability values have deteriorated since 2024.
Bound with Zurich
Vienna shares second place with Zurich – Both cities have performed excellently in the other categories such as health care, environment or culture. Melbourne (Australia) takes fourth place, followed by Geneva in fifth place. Three Australian cities – Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide – can be found in the Top Tien and Vancouver (Canada).
