Care for families – snow: Thousands of Styrians are still without electricity

Date:

Thousands of Styrians in the Murtal region still have to make do without electricity. As reported, a high-voltage pylon in Weißkirchen has collapsed due to fallen trees. We are working hard to resolve the problem.

As Styria’s state warning center announced, individual mobile phone stations had already failed on Saturday, leading to mobile phone service interruptions. The fire armories and the Red Cross offices of the Murau and Judenburg fire brigades had been set up as emergency contact points since Saturday evening.

The state warning center emphasized that they would also be occupied all day on Sunday.

Families should not ‘wait’
Parents of babies and young children were advised to visit relatives or friends outside the affected area if possible and not wait for power to be restored.

According to Energie Netze Steiermark, 268 transformer stations in Styria had failed on Sunday morning. “We have brought 100 transformer stations back online,” said Urs Harnik, spokesperson for Energie Steiermark. However, approximately 20,000 households in the Murtal are still without electricity.

“Extremely dangerous operation”
A team of thirty technicians has been working with the fire brigade since Saturday evening in freezing temperatures to install a temporary replacement lattice mast. The operation in snowy, sometimes impassable terrain is “immensely dangerous and challenging”. A total of 120 Energie Steiermark employees worked to resolve the disruption.

Fire brigades in the region recorded an increase in the number of operations due to the weather situation. Fallen trees and stuck vehicles led to numerous operations by the fire brigade of the Knittelfeld fire brigade association.

In the Gaberlbundesstrasse, 13 people – including two children who were trapped in fallen trees – had to be freed by the fire brigade.
