Italian police have removed specimens of protected animals from traffic at the port of Trieste. The search for the owner has begun!
For fifty years, the Washington Convention on Endangered Species has regulated which endangered animal and plant species may not be traded.
The agreement, ratified in 1982, also applies to Austria and is currently intended to protect almost 33,000 plant and almost 6,000 animal species. However, an Austrian did not want to comply, Italian media recently reported.
Truck with 629 packages
In any case, Trieste’s Customs and Financial Police seized a shipment of household goods at the port of Trieste. Instead of household goods, the truck with 629 packages that would be sent from Iraq to the Netherlands contained 24 cuddly toys.
The primates, rodents, birds and wild cats are all protected. They were packed in four tightly sealed boxes and addressed to an Austrian citizen. No trade certificates were attached. Efforts are now being made to identify the recipient in cooperation with domestic authorities. . .
