At least eleven people have been killed in a police operation in a slum in Rio de Janeiro. At least two other people are injured. According to a Brazilian media report, the police wanted to arrest the heads of a criminal organization allegedly hiding in the area.
According to eyewitnesses, there had been a violent exchange of gunshots in the “Vila Cruzeiro” slum. Police wanted to arrest the leading members of the criminal cartel Comando Vermelho (Red Commando), who were said to be hiding in northern Rio de Janeiro.
According to their own statements, the officers came under fire in their attempt to arrest the criminals. In total, at least 11 people were killed and at least two others were injured in the ensuing firefights. Ten of the fatalities are said to be criminals and one resident of the slum was accidentally hit. Nine rifles, four pistols and a hand grenade were secured.
