He said this after the controversy sparked by a video recorded on November 21 in which he stated that there is no science that says giving up fossil fuels will lead to achieving the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees to limit.
At a press conference held in Dubai today, Climate Summit President Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber reaffirmed his commitment to science as a fundamental guideline in the COP28 presidency strategy. He said this following the controversy sparked by a video recorded on November 21 in which he questioned the relationship between cutting emissions and giving up fossil fuels.
In his statements, Al Jaber stressed the need to reduce global emissions by 43% by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050 to achieve the goals of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees.
Despite the criticism, Al Jaber has expressed surprise at the attempts to undermine the work of the COP28 presidency and reiterated his belief that reducing and abolishing fossil fuels is inevitable. Likewise, he took the opportunity to present his training as an engineer and his curriculum to dispel any “misunderstanding”, emphasizing that science is his “passion and belief”.
