Holidaymakers back again! – City tourism in Austria has recovered

Date:

City tourism in Austria has largely recovered from the corona pandemic. Overnight stays in Vienna and state capitals last year were 99 percent of 2019 levels, as the City Tourism Working Group reported.

In concrete terms, 25.7 million overnight stays were registered in the nine cities in 2023. This represents an increase of 27 percent compared to 2022. Based on 2019, the results were only one percent below the previous results. The share of overnight stays in the capital amounted to 17 percent of the total. According to ARGE City Tourism, this is exactly the value calculated in 2019.

Vienna with the most overnight stays
About two-thirds of overnight stays in the capital were counted in Vienna in 2023. The places beyond that were Salzburg, Innsbruck, Graz, Linz, Klagenfurt, Bregenz, St. Pölten and Eisenstadt. Klagenfurt made the biggest jump compared to 2019. The numbers there were exceeded by 15 percent. Innsbruck, Graz, Linz and St. Pölten also recorded increases. Bregenz, Eisenstadt, Vienna and Salzburg remained below pre-crisis levels.

“Last year was all about catching up on city tourism. He found his way back to his long-standing role as a driver of value creation, a driver of innovation and a guarantee of jobs all year round,” said Viennese tourism director Norbert Kettner in his role as chairman of the ARGE. He emphasized that there is hardly a segment of Austrian tourism that is more dependent on an international audience.
