More than six months after a spectacular coup at a jewelry store in Villach, the handcuffs clicked around the second, still wanted perpetrator. And this is over 2000 kilometers away in Ireland.
Last September, film-worthy scenes took place in the city center of Villach: two criminals broke down the front door of the Leeb and Leschanz jewelry store on Nikolaigasse, smashed several display cases and finally made off with pearls, jewelry and watches from the brands Breitling, Omega , Tag Heuer, Edox with a total value of tens of thousands of euros from the dust.
However, he was closely followed by two brave passers-by who noticed the alarm and gave chase. But the burglar duo managed to shake off the two witnesses. And despite the deployment of the lifted police helicopter, the dog unit and all police officers from the Villach city area, as well as their colleagues from the Villach-Land district, the large-scale search was initially unsuccessful.
Just a day later, one of the two perpetrators entered the search network. In the case of his accomplice, it took a little longer. Thanks to DNA evidence and video analysis, the criminals now knew exactly who they were looking for – and had a European arrest warrant issued for the Romanian refugee.
Delivered in Austria
What now led to success: As police have now officially announced, the 37-year-old was eventually located and arrested in Ireland as part of the tender. And the suspected burglar at the jewelry store has now been extradited to local authorities. And sent to Klagenfurt prison together with his colleague.
