From Tuesday, stricter rules for poultry farming will apply in eight municipalities in Upper Austria and in Steyr. The reason for this is several outbreaks of bird flu among wild birds in other regions of Austria.

Bird flu alarm just a few kilometers from Upper Austria: The virus was detected in wild birds in the Hague Zoo. It is one of several outbreaks of bird flu that have occurred in various regions of Austria since the end of October, mainly among cranes and gray geese.

Mandatory stable for 50 birds or more

To protect domestic poultry from infection, the city of Steyr and eight municipalities in Upper Austria (Baumgartenberg, Mauthausen, Mitterkirchen and Naarn im Machland, Saxen, Dietach, Enns, Kronstorf) will be considered areas with a “highly increased risk of bird flu ”. flu” starting Tuesday. The motto for chickens and co is now: stay home! Farms with 50 or more birds must now keep their poultry in sheds or at least in covered sheds.

This stable requirement also applies in parts of Lower Austria, Carinthia and Burgenland. Smaller companies must also adhere to safety measures.

People not infected

Bird flu has reappeared in recent years. So far, no human diseases have been detected in the current epidemic situation in Europe.
