No PISA shock: – Performance worse, but placement better

Date:

With a year’s delay due to corona, the results of the latest PISA study (focus on mathematics) were presented on Tuesday. Although the performance of local students has deteriorated, Austria has risen a few places in the rankings.

A total of 81 countries took part in the PISA test. Austria is above the OECD and EU average in mathematics, reading and science skills.

Samples of 9500 students
For the study, a sample of approximately 9,500 15- and 16-year-old students from approximately 350 schools in Austria was selected in the spring of 2022, who had to solve tasks in the categories of mathematics, reading, natural sciences and – for the first time – financial literacy . The main subject of the tests in this PISA round was mathematics.

PISA test results (Mathematics 2018 – 2022) for details:

  • Austria lies in mathematics skills Platz 12 – and with 487 points, well above the OECD average (472) and the EU average (474). In survey 108, Austria ranked 22nd (source: FactsMaps).
  • Die 487 points Austria means a competency drop of 12 points. The OECD average fell by 15 points to 472.
  • Japan, South Korea, Estonia and Switzerland are at the top. Similar skills to those of Austrian youth exist in twelve countries (including Finland, Sweden and Denmark).

PISA test results (Lecture 2018 – 2022) for details:

  • Austria stands at 480 points Platz 17 (ranked 21st in the 2018 survey) and slightly above the OECD average (476) and the EU average (472). Similar competencies as in Austria in the neighboring countries Switzerland, Italy, Germany and Hungary.
  • In Austria no significant change to 2018 (484 points) and to 2015 (485).
  • Ireland, Japan, South Korea and Estonia are at the top.

PISA test results (Natural Sciences 2018 – 2022) for details:

  • Austria ranks 19th and with 491 points is above the OECD average (485) and the EU average. Twelve countries perform comparable to Austria, including the Czech Republic, Germany and Hungary. In the 2018 survey, Austria ranked 27th.

The research was postponed for a year due to corona. This also means that the students’ skills after the corona pandemic can be compared with the runs collected before the pandemic.

The last PISA study was in 2018
In the latest PISA study from 2018, Austrian young people were around the OECD average in reading (the main testing area at the time) and science, and slightly above in math.
