The situation in child and adolescent psychiatry remains tense. The number of patients is increasing and the shortage of specialists continues.
As shown in an answer to a question from City Councilor for Health Peter Hacker (SPÖ) to the ÖVP, not a single child and adolescent psychiatrist completed their specialist training in Vienna last year. How crucial this is is evident from the fact that the inpatient child and adolescent psychiatry in the clinic in Floridsdorf has still not been able to open due to a lack of staff.
Children in adult wards
For this reason, 22 minors had to be accommodated in adult wards in 2022. In 2021 there were even 32. “I have been advocating for appropriate reforms for more than ten years. How many more requests for help are needed before someone takes action,” asks ÖVP health spokeswoman Ingrid Korosec.
Expand the offer
A spokeswoman emphasized that the issue of skilled workers is central to the Vienna Health Association. The focus is therefore mainly on expanding the number of training places. In addition, the inpatient offering was expanded in September 2021 with an additional transition psychiatry in the Floridsdorf Clinic with 14 beds.
“In November, 32 psychiatric children and youth beds in the city hospitals were closed, 46 occupied and 19 vacant,” the report continues. The young people spend an average of 2.5 days there.
