There are reports from Moscow that a pro-Russian politician has been killed in a car bomb attack in eastern Ukraine. He is the second Ukrainian politician loyal to Moscow to be murdered on Wednesday.
The exact circumstances of the attack in the center of the city of Luhansk are still being investigated, Russia’s Investigative Committee said on Wednesday. The person killed was Oleg Popov, a member of the Luhansk regional parliament loyal to Moscow. As chairman of the Committee for State Security and Defense, he would previously have been an important figure in the Russian power apparatus in the occupied parts of Ukraine.
Since Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine began in February last year, several high-ranking politicians appointed by Moscow have been the target of attacks.
Just a month ago, another member of the Luhansk regional parliament was killed by an explosive device attached to his car. Ukraine claimed responsibility for the action. Initially there was no response from Kiev to the attack on Popov.
MP found dead near Moscow
Former Ukrainian parliamentarian Illja Kywa (46), a prominent representative of the former pro-Russian camp, was found dead in a hotel near Moscow on Wednesday. According to state agency Ria Novosti, the State Investigative Committee of the Moscow Region said Kywa was killed by an unknown person with a gun.
Kywa, 46, was known for his pro-Russian stance before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine more than 21 months ago. After the invasion, he fled to Russia, where he became a regular on pro-Kremlin political propaganda talk shows. In November 2023, a court in Kiev sentenced him in absentia to 14 years in prison for treason.
