Rushed backwards – collision with chairlift: mother and child fell

Date:

A terrible accident occurred Friday morning in a ski resort in Schwendau in Tyrol’s Zillertal: a chairlift seat suddenly came loose and collided with a second gondola. A mother and her eleven-year-old child then fell about ten meters into the depths and were injured, some of them seriously.

The terrible accident took place on a public holiday around 9:30 am at the Lärchwald four-person chairlift in the municipality of Schwendau in the Zillertal.

As police confirmed, a family of three from Austria – father, mother and an eleven-year-old child – were taking the elevator up when suddenly something must have gone completely wrong: at the height of prop five, the chair apparently suddenly broke free from the fixed anchor rope and slid backwards until it collided with the empty seat behind it.

The 38-year-old suffered serious injuries to her back
The force of the collision threw the mother (38) and her child out of the chair and fell into the depths. After about eight to ten meters, both found themselves on a snow-covered steep slope. While the child suffered minor injuries, according to initial information, the 38-year-old winter sports enthusiast suffered serious injuries to the pelvis and back.

The father, who managed to cling to the chair, also escaped with relatively minor injuries. All three family members were flown to hospital by rescue helicopter.

Investigations began
According to initial information, the four-person chairlift was empty. Now that operations have been halted for the time being, police and cable car authorities are investigating.
