Language in danger? – Burgenland-Croatian must not become extinct

Date:

The Croatian-speaking communities in Burgenland are committed to preserving their culture, language and music.

The communities of Stinatz, Klingenbach, Pama and Parndorf – to name just a few – have one thing in common: many of their residents speak both Croatian and German. The settlement of the Croatian ethnic group in what is now Burgenland dates back to the 16th century. To revive the devastated areas after the Turkish wars, about 100,000 Croats, mainly from Dalmatia, were settled by the landlords in what was then the west of the Kingdom of Hungary. Today, it is estimated that around 50,000 to 60,000 people with Croatian language skills live in Burgenland, Vienna and Lower Austria. This makes the Burgenland Croats the largest recognized ethnic group in Austria.
