Million dollar case – Trump’s ex-lawyer sued for defamation

Date:

Former US President Donald Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, appeared in court in Washington DC on Monday to file a claim for damages. The former New York mayor is facing a payment of up to $43 million.

The proceedings concern Giuliani’s allegations of fraud in connection with Trump’s 2020 election defeat. Giuliani had repeatedly spread the ex-president’s lies about election fraud and accused two election workers of fraud. The two women subsequently received multiple threats of violence.

The responsible federal judge, Beryl Howell, had already ruled in August that Giuliani was liable for defamation against Ruby Freeman and her daughter Wandrea Moss. The civil trial that has now started only concerns the amount of benefits to which the 79-year-old Giuliani will be sentenced.

Freeman and Moss are seeking damages of up to $43 million. A jury will decide how much damages the former New York mayor must pay to the two Georgia election workers.

After the start of the trial, the ex-mayor of New York appeared to be unreasonable. “If I testify, you’ll get the full story. And it will be abundantly clear that I told the truth,” Giuliani said. The court had already held him liable for defamation in August.

After Trump’s election defeat, Giuliani led the ousted president’s efforts to challenge the election results. The lawyer, who was highly respected during his time as mayor of New York, repeatedly caused a stir with sometimes bizarre performances and unsubstantiated accusations of election fraud.
