The almost blind young buck “Moritz” is looking for a new home and company. In freedom the animal is doomed to die. His surrogate mother and hunters are still hoping for a Christmas miracle.
“It would break my heart if ‘Moritz’ did not find other people with whom he could live,” says Maria Mühlparzer with tears in her eyes. The woman from Bleiburg has been caring for injured deer for years. “If they are healthy, they are released back into the wild.” But with “Moritz” it is different. The young goat suffers from cataracts and can hardly see.
Police officers took him to the animal lover in July because his mother had been murdered. Mühlparzer nursed the deer with sheep’s and goat’s milk: “Then ‘Moritz’ was already blind in one eye, but now he can hardly see anything in the second.”
Walking a blind deer
“Moritz” lives in the garden in front of Mühlparzer’s apartment in Einersdorf and now weighs over 20 kilos. “Unfortunately, that will not be possible for a long time in this small place,” regrets the woman from Bleiburg. ‘Deer Mama’ goes for a walk with ‘Moritz’ three times a day: ‘He follows my voice and my scent.’
Hunters are also hoping for Christmas miracles
Mühlparzer is looking for a new home for him where he can make friends with other dogs who will welcome him into their community. “Only in such an environment can the young deer survive. In the wild it would be doomed to die,” says district hunter Christian Maurel. “Hopefully a Christmas miracle will happen for him.”
