A young cattle breeding farm in the Tyrolean Lechtal (Reutte district) has been closed due to suspected tuberculosis. During research, the pathogen was found in five cattle. The affected animals were euthanized and tissue samples were sent to a laboratory for further clarification. There is no danger to people.
The infected cattle were found as part of the TB surveillance program, which is carried out annually in risk areas (upper Lechtal, Stanzertal, Verwall, Karwendel-Almen in the Schwaz district). “The final findings are still pending and will only be available in eight to ten weeks, but all previous studies clearly point to tuberculosis,” said a statement from the state of Tyrol.
Affected animals were killed
The affected farm was immediately closed by the veterinary authorities and the five affected cattle were euthanized for diagnostic purposes. “The operation will remain officially closed until TB-free test results are available from two inventory tests carried out every two months,” authorities emphasize. There is currently no further evidence of tuberculosis in cattle herds in the affected areas.
