As Hamas terrorists murdered or kidnapped innocent Israeli civilians into the Gaza Strip on October 7, elderly kidnap victim Yaffa Adar appeared relaxed in photos of the carnage – many even thought they saw a smile on her face. But the released 85-year-old is certainly not demented, as observers initially assumed. In an interview she explained what was going through her mind during the anxious moments of her kidnapping.
Images and video recordings of Hamas’ major attack on Israel caused horror in October. But Yaffa Adar, who was abducted from her kibbutz Nir Oz by the terrorists in a golf cart, appears almost peaceful in the images as she is forced to drive into the Gaza Strip with heavily armed men. Wrapped in a pink, floral blanket, it almost seems as if she is on her way on a beautiful journey – if it were not for the fact that behind her is a cheering fighter with a gun in his hand.
Due to the 85-year-old’s unimpressed expression, many observers assumed the vulnerable woman was not even aware of the dangerous situation. But as the Israeli revealed in an interview, she was very aware of what had happened. But she decided to remain calm.
In this post you can see how Adar is released from the hospital after her release:
Hostage: “They spat on me and shouted”
“I decided not to give them the pleasure of seeing me scared,” she told Israeli broadcaster Channel 12. The situation was extremely difficult. “They threw me in the car, there were a lot of people around us and they spat on me and shouted. “It wasn’t pleasant,” Adar said.
“As I sat there, I thought to myself: I will not let myself be destroyed. “I want my children to be proud of me,” she said in an interview.
Adar survived his childhood in the Warsaw Ghetto
The woman has had an eventful life. She survived the Warsaw Ghetto as a child and then moved to Israel. Their kibbutz Nir Oz campaigned for peace with the Palestinians, but that could not save the village from the destruction of the Hamas attack. She has three children, eight grandchildren and is a great-grandmother of seven. Her family is very happy that she was released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. “She is the glue of our family. She loves her life,” her granddaughter Adva Adar explained while still in the clutches of Hamas.
