Blizzards hit large parts of Russia on Friday, blanketing Moscow with some of the heaviest snowfall in decades. 30 percent of the average monthly precipitation fell at night. The result was traffic chaos.
On the main roads, where truck drivers had to deal with more than 20 centimeters of fresh snow and strong winds, traffic was often at a standstill. Storm Vanya could bring the strongest snowstorms in 60 years, according to meteorologists.
More than a fifth of December’s average snowfall was measured in just 24 hours at measuring stations in Moscow, where streets were covered in snow and drivers struggled to free their vehicles from parking spaces, Reuters news agency reported.
Schools are closed in some regions
According to weather website Gismeteo, total snowfall in Moscow in December could reach 50 centimeters – the highest snowfall recorded for the month. As Russian television reported, schools in some regions of the European part of the country were closed due to the snowfall.
A ten-kilometre-long traffic jam formed overnight on one of Russia’s most important roads – the M4 – in the south of the country, leaving drivers stranded in freezing temperatures. More than 130,000 workers and tens of thousands of clearing machines battle the snow masses.
