Tyrolean lifesaver – “I was the only one who could help him”

Date:

A few meters below the summit of the Broad Peaks in the Himalayas, Lukas Wörle (30) from Ausserfern came across a motionless man in the snow. Without further ado, he grabbed him and carried him to base camp, saving his life.

Lukas Wörle from Wängle will remember July 15, 2023 even longer. At 2am he started his trek to Broad Peak from Base Camp 3 at 7000 meters towards the summit (8051 metres). Hours later, without oxygen and without a carrier, he was close to his destination. However, behind a hill he made a shocking discovery: “I saw a man lying next to him with vomit in the snow. It quickly became clear that he had a bigger problem,” says Wörle. The man did not respond. The reason: an extreme case of altitude sickness.

Refused help and was taken to the camp with his last strength
He immediately contacted his brother and father, who were waiting at the base camp. “They discovered which group he belonged to and asked for help. But this was refused. Then I realized I was the only one who could help him.” So he grabbed the man – who turned out to be a Pakistani – and pulled and carried him through the area into the valley. Further on he met an American carrying medicine, after which another joined him with oxygen. So they saved his life.

It was only in the camp that Wörle realized how tiring the mission was: “Until then, little went through my mind. As I lay in the tent, I noticed how extremely exhausted I was.” A week later the hero rewarded himself with a paragliding flight from 7,700 meters into the valley.
