Stefan Wagner from Sankt Georgen suffered a heart attack during a hunting trip in 2021. The quick help of his old friend Stefan Rodenbicker saved his life.
Weidmann Wagner was not feeling well on Sunday. It was December 19, 2021, just before Christmas. Nevertheless, he took part in the hunt as usual. Also there: good friends and relatives. While hunting, he suddenly had problems with his circulation and broke out in a cold sweat. The 62-year-old barely managed to say: “I think the lights are about to go out,” before collapsing in a friend’s arms.
Teamwork to save your friend
In the distance, Stefan Rodenbicker heard the desperate calls of his fellow hunters. Without thinking, the 36-year-old turned around and rushed to help his friend, whose heart had stopped beating. Thanks to Rodenbicker’s years of experience in the fire brigade, he immediately started doing chest compressions. The hunting friends called the emergency number and sent the emergency services to the field. A difficult undertaking because the access roads were not easy to find.
Unconscious in the ambulance
Minutes had already passed and Rodenbicker was still trying to revive his friend. He gave no sign of life. The 36-year-old still didn’t think about quitting. Police arrived about half an hour later and released Rodenbicker from CPR. A short time later, the rescue service and emergency doctor arrived. After another 90 minutes of CPR, Wagner was taken to the hospital. A few days after New Year’s Eve the good news came: the hunter was over the mountain.
“When push came to shove, we all stuck together. That was a team effort. I couldn’t have done it alone,” Rodenbicker said. Nearly two years after the accident, Wagner has largely recovered. Nevertheless, his “second birthday” is celebrated every year on December 19. The rescuer will now be honored during a joint gala by “Kronen Zeitung” and ORF.
