Dramatic minutes on Saturday evening in Stainz, Styria: According to the fire brigade, a smoke detector and an attentive landlady saved the life of a woman on Saturday evening in Stainz. The device alerted people to a house fire – and the unconscious resident was rescued.
Coincidentally, the owner of the apartment building in Stainz was on site on Saturday evening when she heard the loud alarm sound of a smoke detector in a ground floor apartment – she immediately alerted the fire brigade.
When the first firefighters from the Stainz Volunteer Fire Department arrived, no smoke was detectable. Because no one opened or knocked, the emergency services entered. The fire was discovered in the apartment and the crew found the already unconscious resident on the floor. The woman was immediately removed from the fire apartment and then treated by the emergency doctor and later taken to hospital by ambulance.
“Smoke detectors are life-savers”
The smoke alarm went off because the food in the pot caught fire. “This case shows that smoke detectors are life-saving,” says fire chief and operations manager Robert Eibl of the FF Stainz. Only the courageous intervention of the property owner, who happened to be on the scene and alerted the fire brigade, could have made matters worse.
