The bombings at the Al Jaouni school in central Gaza have killed a total of 22 people. “Schools and other civilian infrastructure must be protected at all times, they are not targets,” UNRWA stressed.
The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) reported that six of his employees have been murdered in two Israeli airstrikes against one school in Nuseiratcenter of the Gaza Strip, killing a total of 22 people.
“This is the highest number of deaths among our staff in a single incident,” UNRWA laments in its profile on X.
Among the deceased are the UNRWA Reception Director and other team members who assisted approximately 12,000 displaced people at the Al Jaouni school, mainly women and children.
Today the Secretary General of the UN, António Guterreshas described the deadly attack as “unacceptable” and reiterated in X the urgent need “to put an end now to these dramatic violations of international humanitarian law.”
The Israeli military confirmed in a statement that it had attacked an alleged Hamas command and control center embedded in this school in Nuseirat.
According to UNRWA data, the Al Jaouni school has been attacked five times since the offensive on Gaza began in October, killing around 40 people.
The last attack took place on July 6, killing sixteen Palestinians and wounding another fifty.
“Schools and other civilian infrastructure must be protected at all times, they are not targets,” UNRWA stressed. “We call on all parties to the conflict never to use schools or surrounding areas for military or combat purposes.”
Reactions to the attack
He Palestinian government has strongly condemned the “horrific massacre” and stated that it is part of the “brutal massacres” committed by Israeli forces as part of their offensive against the Gaza Strip.
He has called on the international community to “show the necessary courage” to “put pressure on the occupying power” to “stop its aggression, genocide and displacement against the Palestinians” and to grant this population “international protection”.
Finally, he also called for “the protection of UNRWA personnel and other humanitarian workers from war crimes committed by the Israeli occupation forces,” according to a statement published on his account on the social network X.
The United States Secretary of State, Antonius Blinkencalled for protection of humanitarian personnel working in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, hours after the Nuseirat attack. “Humanitarian sites (where workers are) need to be protected, and it’s something we continue to raise with Israel,” Blinken told a news conference in Warsaw.
Taste, One of the main mediators between Israel and Hamas on Thursday called for an urgent international investigation into Israeli attacks on shelters and schools run by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), while “strongly” condemning a new attack on a Palestinian UNRWA school in Nuseirat, adding that “this appalling massacre is a confirmation of the style of the occupation and its contempt for international law.”
