Lower Austrian Rolf Majcen (57) now raced twelve kilometers from the Marmolada into the valley on runners up to 80 km/h – a new toboggan record!
Rolf Majcen likes extremes. Whether high or underground – the lawyer from Teesdorf in the Baden district is attracted by the extraordinary. As a stair climber, Majcen has climbed world-famous buildings such as the Eiffel Tower and the Empire State Building on foot, crossed the Alps in a hot air balloon, explored caves and regularly runs marathons. The 57-year-old can also look back on top performances as a cyclist and ski mountaineer.
Icy “ride” at 80 km/h
And on Saturday the extreme athlete entered the Guinness Book of Records again. Majcen dared to descend the highest mountain of the Dolomites on a sled – from the top of the Punta Rocca of the Marmolada he descended twelve kilometers from a height of 3,265 meters to Malga Ciapela. With the daring ride, the Lower Austrian climbed 1,815 meters, the previous record was 1,700. The historic ride was captured on video camera by Marco Spagnolli and Adan Darman, who accompanied Majcen on skis.
Rolf Majcen had to overcome a number of steep slopes with the sled. The double-digit temperatures below zero left them completely freezing: “You accelerate to 80 km/h in just a few seconds,” says the extreme athlete. The rapid descent started at 7:44 am and Majcen reached the valley station of the Marmolada cable car at 8:18 am – the record was achieved!
