Up to minus 29.1 degrees! – Cold wave in China breaks several records

Date:

After the summer heat wave, a cold wave in China is now setting a new record: on Thursday morning alone, the state weather service recorded historic minus temperatures at more than twenty measuring stations. In Hohhot, the capital of Inner Mongolia, an almost 70-year-old record was broken with minus 29.1 degrees Celsius.

Cold warnings were in force for large areas in the north, east and southeast of the country. This also affects many survivors of the massive earthquake in northwest China, whose homes have been destroyed or severely damaged. After having to endure the bitter cold in makeshift tents for the first time, thousands of helpers have been ensuring that they are housed in real tents and other temporary shelters since Wednesday.

But the emergency workers are also struggling with the cold. The tents are not a long-term solution, one in the Liugou municipality, near the epicenter, told AFP news agency. However, given the low temperatures, reconstruction in the affected communities is currently not possible. “Work cannot start until next spring.”

The magnitude 5.9 earthquake shook Gansu and Qinghai provinces on Tuesday night. On Thursday, state news agency Xinhua reported 135 deaths and at least twelve people were still missing. It was the deadliest earthquake in China since 2014, when more than 600 people were killed in the southwestern province of Yunnan.
